Independent solar research, built for Irish homeowners.
AskSolar exists to give Irish homeowners a straight answer about solar — what it really costs, whether a battery earns its keep, how the SEAI grant and export payments work — before a single salesperson gets involved. We're not an installer and we don't sell panels. We analyse what real Irish installs actually cost and deliver, and we publish what we find.
What AskSolar is
AskSolar is operated by Mawla Ltd, a company based in Dublin, Ireland. Our 66answer pages and the assistant are our own independent analysis of thousands of real Irish solar installs, quotes and prices — not marketing copy supplied by anyone with panels to sell. When we don't know something, or when it genuinely depends on your home and usage, we say so rather than guess.
Everything here is for the Republic of Ireland, and we're not affiliated with the SEAI.
How we compute fair prices
Our fair-price ranges come from analysing real Irish install data — system sizes, battery configurations and the prices homeowners actually paid — rather than installer list prices or headline grant figures. The method, in plain terms:
- We group installs by system size (kWp) and whether a battery is included, because those two factors move the price more than anything else.
- For each group we take a typical range — not a single number — so you see where a fair offer sits and what the spread looks like, rather than a false-precision figure.
- We deduct the SEAI grant(currently up to €1,800) so the range reflects what you'd actually pay, and we keep the grant figure current as the scheme changes.
- Payback and savings estimates use Irish electricity unit rates and the Clean Export Guarantee, modelled on typical household usage — your own half-hourly smart-meter data will always be more accurate.
Two honest caveats. Our estimates are indicative: they tell you whether a quote is in a sensible range, not what your roof will cost to the euro — always get multiple written quotes. And our data reflects the installs we've analysed, so the more the Irish market shifts, the more we re-check our numbers against fresh evidence.
